Paintings About Nothing

Paintings about Nothing – Statement – June 2015

I made over 400 acrylic paintings on 22"x 30" rag paper in the years 2002- 2007.

The paintings were abstract formalist or, geometric abstractions. I did no preliminary

drawings, and did not use straightedges or tape. Essentially they were hand-painted,

and I worked on several at a time, using similar or related colors mixed in jars.

I called them "Paintings about Nothing". They were my response to the horrific

events of September, 2001, and an expression of my disenchantment with the

world of people and objects. I had lost interest in representing that world in my art.

I learned much about color, form and pictorial dynamics. That knowledge has

become part of the fabric of my artistic sensibility.
